Harry Potter and the wizarding world has had a remarkable amount of adaptations over its relatively short existence compared to some other series. One of the areas that the franchise has always trailed a little behind was video games because they were generally adaptions of the movies. Some were good, but some were just okay, and now it looks like we may be getting our first great wizarding world game in the form of Hogwarts Legacy.
Hogwarts Legacy comes from developer Portkey Games and is being billed as a new chapter in the story of the wizarding world. The game is an action-adventure RPG game that puts you in control of a custom wizard or witch who is being transferred to Hogwarts in your 5th year. The game has a few different conflicts for you to participate in and even more for you to do beyond that.
When does the game come out?
It has been confirmed that this game will be released in the holiday season of 2022. So that means you are looking at either a November or December release. Originally the game was to release in 2021 but was delayed and pushed back to 2022.
What will the game be about?
This game is an RPG adventure game set in the year 1890. It will revolve around your character, whom you will be able to customize down to which house they get placed in. You are arriving a bit later than the other student, coming in as a fifth year. That is not the only thing different about you, as you can also command unknown ancient magic. This magic may or may not be tied to corrupting magic affecting magical beasts in the land.
In addition, an ongoing goblin rebellion led by a goblin named rank. Part of your mission is to help determine how dangerous this rebellion is. As it turns out, it might be very dangerous as the rebellion has aligned itself with a dark group of witches and wizards.
On top of all of this, you are a student at Hogwarts. This fact means that you will spend much of your time going to classes, mastering new spells and other magical abilities, and making new friends. This school life will be a third full-time consideration for your character and will be important to the story.
What can you do?
This list of story missions and activities doesn’t scratch the surface of in-game activities available to you. You will have room for requirements as a base for growing plants and making potions. You can rescue magical beasts, nurse them back to health, and explore Hogwarts. You can even explore places outside of Hogwarts like Hogsmead and the forbidden forest.
What have we not seen?
In addition to what we have confirmed, we know that there is a lot we haven’t seen. The skill tree system has thus far gone unexplained in terms of depth or the actual abilities it will grant you. We have also seen very little of the more choice-driven systems in the game and the larger impact that they will have on the game over all. If certain choices were to grant certain allies or allow access to alternative routes, these would be an excellent way for the RPG elements to be utilized.
There are also rumored to be systems and features we haven’t heard of yet. For example, it has been rumored that in addition to friends and allies, there may be a romance system in the game. There have also been rumors that your wand will also be customizable in some way.
So there will be plenty for players to do and see in the wizarding world.
